Welcome, al-Kitāb Student! Today, we will reflect on Exodus Chapter 35, which tells the story of how the Israelites responded to God’s call by bringing offerings for the construction of the Tabernacle. After experiencing various trials, the Israelites learned to obey and willingly offer what they had for God’s glory. In this chapter, we will see how obedience and generosity in giving are essential parts of true worship. Let’s explore the deep meaning of this passage.

The chapter begins with Moses reminding the Israelites of God’s command regarding the Sabbath. They were instructed to rest on the seventh day and refrain from any work, even from lighting a fire in their homes. This emphasizes the seriousness of God’s command to keep the Sabbath holy as a sign of His covenant with His people.
Afterward, Moses conveys God’s command to collect offerings for the construction of the Tabernacle. All those whose hearts were moved were called to bring gifts such as gold, silver, blue and purple yarn, and various materials needed to build the sacred dwelling for God. The Israelites responded in an extraordinary way—they came willingly and gave with joyful hearts, so much so that the collected materials exceeded what was needed.
Beyond material offerings, God also bestowed special skills upon certain individuals, such as Bezalel and Oholiab, to craft all the necessary furnishings and utensils for the Tabernacle with exceptional craftsmanship. This shows that God does not only ask for material offerings but also calls His people to use their talents and skills to serve Him.
Application in Daily Life: Giving Willingly and Serving with Talents
Exodus 35 teaches us that worshiping God is not just about prayer and praise but also about offering our best to Him. The Israelites gave willingly, not out of obligation, but because their hearts were filled with love for God. This serves as an example for us—not only to give materially but also to offer our time, talents, and skills for God’s work.
In our lives, we often see giving as a burden, but God desires us to give joyfully. Additionally, He has given each of us unique talents, just as He did with Bezalel and Oholiab. We are called to use our skills—whether in our careers, ministries, or daily lives—as a form of worship to God.
Reflective Questions: Using What We Have for God
Do we give to God joyfully or out of obligation?
How can we offer our talents and skills for God’s glory?
In what ways do we still need to learn to trust God with our resources?
"Giving to God is not a loss but an honor to be part of His work."
Thank you for joining us in reflecting on Exodus Chapter 35. May we be encouraged to give our best to God—whether through our wealth, time, or talents. See you in the next discussion!
