Welcome, al-Kitāb Student, to a new phase in our journey through the Book of Genesis. Chapter 17 brings us to a profoundly meaningful moment when God revealed Himself to Abraham, establishing an unshakable covenant and instituting circumcision as a sign of loyalty.
At the age of ninety-nine, Abraham experienced a divine visitation that transformed his life. The Almighty God made a covenant with Abram, whose name was later changed to Abraham, promising to make him exceedingly numerous. This was no ordinary promise; it was a covenant of descendants, involving Abraham as the father of many nations. Furthermore, God pledged to establish an eternal covenant, becoming the God of Abraham and his descendants.
Within the framework of this covenant, God ordained circumcision as a sign of the agreement between Him and Abraham. Every male among Abraham's descendants, whether born in his household or acquired from outside, was to undergo circumcision. Circumcision was not merely a physical act; it symbolized loyalty and obedience to God. It became a covenant that spoke of heartfelt obedience and devotion.
Despite God's promise of numerous descendants, Abraham could not help but laugh when God mentioned that his ninety-year-old wife, Sarah, would bear a son named Isaac. In Abraham's consideration, Ishmael, the son of Hagar the maidservant, seemed a suitable candidate. However, God affirmed that His covenant would be with Isaac, who would be born to Sarah.
Application in Daily Life: Loyalty and Obedience
For us, Abraham's covenant teaches about loyalty and obedience to God. While circumcision is no longer a physical sign for us, it reminds us to live in obedience and loyalty to God's commands. The everlasting covenant with God requires a sincere heart and unwavering obedience in every aspect of our lives.
