Book of Exodus Chapter 1: Understanding Oppression and God's Protection

Welcome back, al-Kitāb Student, to our contemplation of the Word of God. This time, we delve into the depths of the Book of Exodus chapter 1, which provides an insight into the oppression faced by the Israelites in Egypt and God's extraordinary protection.

The first chapter of Exodus takes us to a time when the Israelites were oppressed in Egypt. Although they came to Egypt with Jacob and his family, their numbers rapidly grew to seventy souls. However, despite their increase in numbers, they faced severe oppression.

A new king arose in Egypt who did not know Joseph or the goodwill that had existed between Egypt and the Israelites. Concerned about the growth of the Israelite population, the king acted ruthlessly. He subjected the Israelites to forced labor, forcing them to work tirelessly and mercilessly.

Despite the oppression they faced, God did not forget His people. He provided extraordinary protection to the Israelites. Even when the Egyptian king ordered midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill newborn Hebrew boys, the midwives chose to obey God rather than man. They let the babies live, and God blessed them abundantly.
